Critical Survey of Drama

Individual author essays contain brief biographical information; list of works; analysis of themes and techniques; critical interpretation of the playwright’s works; and resource list for further study. Volumes 7-8 contain several essays covering dramatic genres; the forms of drama throughout history; ethnic/regional drama; and musical, experimental, and radio and television drama, as well as a comprehensive subject index.  Arranged alphabetically by author’s last name. Masterplots II: Drama Series

Contains brief critical evaluations of selected works of 20th-century drama. Most are English-language works, but representative plays in translation from European countries are also included. Arranged alphabetically by title of play.

Each article includes time and place of the work’s first performance, setting, principal characters, an overview of the action and plot, themes and meanings, and dramatic devices. Cumulative author and title indexes can be found in Volume 4. Some material available online in Literary Reference Center.

Drama for Students

In-depth analyses of classic examples of drama.  Each entry includes an introduction to the play and the author, a plot summary, descriptions of important characters, analysis of important themes in the drama, an explanation of important literary techniques in the play, a critical overview, excerpts from published critical essays, and an essay placing the drama within its historical context. The most recent volume contains a cumulative author/title index.  Some material available online in Literature Resources from Gale.

The Gale Series of Literary Criticism

Click on the Find Articles link at the top of the library home page for a list of most used article databases by subject. Login is required once a database is selected. Login is automatic from the library computers. Advanced Search provides a guided method for combining keywords.

 

General OneFile (Gale)
