There
are several sources, and formats, of information for news on a specific date. Newspapers are published daily and
retained in libraries in microfilm format, with some issues available online
through PJC library subscription resources. Weekly magazines are retained in print, bound and in microfilm
format, with some issues available online through the PJC library.
Newspapers at PJC Library
The Pensacola campus library has back issues of three newspapers on microfilm on the first floor. Microfilm copies of newspapers often include television program schedules, movies showing, and, sometimes, songs on the “hits” charts. Use the newspaper issue’s index, generally on the front page, to identify the page on which to find this information. Microfilm reader/copier is available. Copies are .15 per page.

Newspapers Online
Many
newspapers are available online, however, most charge for copies. PJC library
has several newspaper collections online for free with login through library’s
homepage at http://library.pjc.edu.
To access the newspaper resources, click on
the Find Articles link at the top
of the library home page. Login is automatic from the library computers. To log in from remote computers: 1)
select Pensacola Junior college from the drop down menu; 2) type the 14-digit
PJC photo ID barcode number in the Borrower
ID box; 3) type the last four digits of your Social Security number into the
PIN box. Before logging in, be sure to activate the barcode number on your ID
card by contacting the library at 484-2002 or by stopping by the
Circulation Desk in the library. Once logged in, click on the Alphabetical
link at the top of the page. From the alphabetical list, click on the resource
of your choice.
America’s Newspapers
A collection of more than
600 U.S. newspapers. Titles may be searched individually and by date. Contains a
set called Major Metro titles which may be useful.

Users may select a
newspaper by title and by date. Use the drop down menu to limit to date. A
prompt will appear allowing a search before a specific date. Use another
drop down menu to search after a specific date. No need to put search
words in the search boxes.
New York Times Historical
Coverage of this newspaper
is from 1851 through 2003. Allows for a search On This Date. No need to enter search words in search box.

.20 per copy.

Academic Search Complete is available from the
PJC Library homepage,
under Most Used Article Databases.
Login is required. This is a multidisciplinary source of articles from
magazines and scholarly (peer reviewed) journals. Includes abstracts
(summaries) of most articles. To limit to full-text articles only, and
or scholarly (peer-reviewed) journals, check the appropriate box(es). Use Published Date From below and to the
right of the search box, to search by a single month. No need to enter search
words into search box. However, a search on place of birth should return
articles about the place during the month searched. Results will vary according
to place and date entered. Most articles listed are from the early 1990’s to
the present.
Weekly magazines like Time and Newsweek are included in this database, but the text of the
articles are only provided from 1990+. To
read older issues, locate bound or microfilm issues at the Pensacola Library.
