(For Academic Subjects)
Academic Info - "online since 1998, is an independent Internet subject directory owned Michael Madin and maintained with the assistance of a quality group of subject specialists." Selection criteria is that the "primary focus of the site must be academic, with its intended audience at the upper high school level or above." Now contains advertisements.Argus Clearinghouse - "The Argus Clearinghouse provides a central access point for value-added topical guides which identify, describe, and evaluate Internet-based information resources. Our mission is to facilitate intellectual access to information resources on the Internet. In order to avoid duplication of effort, our focus is intentionally narrow." Not maintained since January 2002.
Best Information on the Net - created by O'Keefe Library, St. Ambrose University (Davenport, Iowa). Major divisions are Resources by Major, Hot Paper Topics and Alphabetical Index.
BUBL LINK Catalogue of Internet Resources - "a catalogue of selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas and catalogued according to DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification). All items are selected, evaluated, catalogued and described. Links are checked and fixed each month. LINK stands for Libraries of Networked Knowledge." "BUBL 5:15 provides an alternative interface to this catalogue, based on subject terms rather than DDC. The aim is to guarantee at least 5 relevant resources for every subject included, and a maximum of 15 resources for most subjects, hence the name 5:15. Big subject areas are broken down into smaller categories. However, the upper limit of 15 is not rigidly applied, so there may be up to 35 items for some subjects." Subject terms are loosely based on Library of Congress Subject Headings. This is a British service.
Google Scholar - Beta release. Not a subject directory, but a component of the Google search engine which "enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web." Articles marked "citation" indicate articles not yet available online. Another way to search for scholarly literature online, with full text available, is to use library resources available to PJC students. For further information on these and other article resources, see Finding Articles.
INFOMINE - Scholarly Internet Resource collections. "Intended for the introduction and use of Internet/Web resources of relevance to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It is being offered as a comprehensive showcase, virtual library and reference tool containing highly useful Internet/Web resources including databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, listservs, online library card catalogs, articles and directories of researchers, among many other types of information. INFOMINE is librarian built. Over 20 University of California and other university and college librarians have contributed to building INFOMINE."
Resource Discovery Network (RDN) - "UKs free national gateway to Internet resources for the learning, teaching and research community. The service currently links to more than 80,000 resources via a series of subject-based information gateways (or hubs). The RDN is primarily aimed at Internet users in UK further and higher education but is freely available to all." "The RDN is a collaboration of over seventy educational and research organisations, including the Natural History Museum and the British Library, and builds upon the foundations of the subject gateway activity carried out under the JISC's (Joint Information Systems Committee)..."
Scout Report - "Published every Friday both on the web and by email, it provides a fast, convenient way to stay informed of valuable resources on the Internet." Each resource is selected, researched and annotated by "professional librarians and subject matter experts." Voice of the Shuttle - "mission has been to provide a structured and briefly annotated guide to online resources that at once respects the established humanities disciplines in their professional organization and points toward the transformation of those disciplines as they interact with the sciences and social sciences and with new digital media." Catalogs and links to electronic resources across the broad spectrum of the humanities and related social sciences. Arranged by discipline, with separate sections for English Literature (includes American), Literary Theory, Minority Studies, and Women's Studies, among many others. From the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The WWW Virtual Library - "oldest catalog of the web, started by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of html and the web itself." This index "is run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert; even though it isn't the biggest index of the web, the VL pages are widely recognised as being amongst the highest-quality guides to particular sections of the web."
