Some specialized search engines

"Invisible Web" (also called Deep Web) is material on the WWW that cannot be seen/is not indexed by general search engines. Several tools index the Web sites that comprise the "invisible web." Some of these are:

Complete Planet: indexes "hundreds of thousands of databases that contain Deep Web content." Help.

Direct Search: "a growing compilation of links to the search interfaces of resources that contain data not easily or entirely searchable/accessible from general search tools like Alta Vista, Google, or Hotbot."  Created by Gary Price of George Washington University.

Internet Archive Machine: an attempt to create a  "digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, ... [to] provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public." The Archive "allows people to visit archived versions of stored Web sites. Visitors to the Wayback Machine can type in a URL, select a date range, and then begin surfing on an archived version of the Web."
