FIND BOOKS

PJC and other Florida Community College Catalogs

To locate books at PJC and other Florida community college libraries, click on Find Books at the top of the Library homepage. Search by Subject and type in the common or scientific name of the animal. Search by Keyword can be done for a broader, but less defined search. Advanced Search provides a guided method for combining keywords. If PJC does not have what you need, click on the dropdown arrow that follows At Pensacola Junior College and select All Community Colleges. Books can be requested from other campus libraries. Florida University Catalogs

To find books at UWF Library, go to the Library home page and click on Search Other Libraries and then Search UWF. Type in the common or scientific name of the animal. Click the dropdown arrow and select Subject Heading. The Anywhere option will give you a broader, but less defined search. PJC students can check out up to six books at a time from UWF using their PJC photo ID card. Click on Search All University Libraries on the PJC Library homepage to select another Florida university catalog to search. Books can be requested from the other state universities through Interlibrary Loan. To access the form and the instructions go to http://library.pjc.edu/ill.cfm

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES (Article Databases)

To access the following databases, click on the Find Articles link at the top of the Library home page. Login is automatic from the Library computers. From remote computers, it is necessary to log in by: 1) selecting Pensacola Junior college from the drop down menu; 2) typing the 14-digit PJC photo ID number in the Borrower ID box; 3) typing the last four digits of your Social Security number into the PIN box. Before logging in, be sure to activate the barcode number on your ID card by contacting the library at 484-2002, stopping by the Circulation Desk in the Library lobby, or emailing Libraryreference@pjc.edu  Once logged in, click on the Alphabetical link at the top of the page. Select a database from the following list.

Academic Search Complete

Multidisciplinary source of articles from magazines and scholarly (peer reviewed) journals. Includes abstracts (summaries) of most articles. To limit to full-text articles only, and or scholarly (peer reviewed) journals, check the appropriate box(es). Advanced Search provides a guided method for combining keywords.

AGRICOLA via First Search

Covers every major agricultural subject including animal science, animal breeding and veterinary medicine. Provides abstracts (summaries) for articles, along with a link to Borrow this item from another library. Once logged in, click on Advanced Search. At Search for, enter the keywords and limit to Articles for Document type. Click Search. Select an item. To request a copy of an article via Interlibrary Loan, click on Borrow this item from another library. Some item records contain a link to Libraries worldwide that own item, which allows you to check if UWF owns the journal; otherwise, do a title search in UWF’s catalog by opening another browser window and going to pjc.lrc.edu.  Click on Search Other Libraries and then select Search UWF.

Biological & Agricultural Index Plus

Indexes articles out of core biology and agricultural journals. The default search is a Smart Search (relevant words). Other search options are Subject and Keyword. Article results are relevance ranked with an option to Sort by date. On the Limit to section of the search screen, check Full Text Articles and Peer Reviewed.

JSTOR

Archives the back issues of numerous core scholarly journals. Current issues (past 1-5 years) are not available. Begin by clicking on Advanced Search. Limit to an Article search. Article results are relevance ranked with an option to Sort by newest to oldest.

Virtual Reference Library

Collection of over 30 reference ebooks including Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia and Beacham’s Guide to the Endangered Species of North America. Click on the Environment category to search either one of these titles individually. Hyper-linked cross references appear at the end of the articles. Graphics are included.

WRITING & CITING

Michael Harvey’s The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing. Provides help in writing the research paper and the argument (see Arguments link, blue box, left side), as well as MLA & APA links (yellow bar, top of page) that provide citing help for both works cited/references and in-text citations.  http://nutsandbolts.washcoll.edu/
